Safety Work at SKWA

NG ConveyorJKSP have recently completed various safety projects at Smurfit Kappa West Auckland (SKWA). HSE required that the corrugator needed the e-stop system upgraded and that some safety lock out systems be installed. JKSP engineered a CAT 4 e-stop panel which linked into each individual machine on the corrugator line to make it stop simultaneously. Safety key lockouts were installed on each single facer and the cut off knife and guards were fitted in strategic positions along the machine. A number of other jobs were undertaken, including Isolating individual motors to complete the projects.

NG Conveyor

NG ConveyorJKSP Services recently added a new designed “NG Conveyor” into the ICS Limerick plant in Eire. The line shaft roller conveyor was integrated into an existing materials handling system which included a transfer car interface.

ICS needed a buffer line to be able to store work destined for the strapper line when the system was at full stretch. The conveyor stores loads when the strapper is in use but also delivers them when the system allows. It was designed by our sister company STS can also be used as a through conveyor or as a delivery line loaded at one end by fork truck. The control system comprised of Siemens equipment including PLC and touch screen.

Knife Bars

Knife BarsIn July this year JKSP were asked to refurbish the Multi Torque knife bars at Mondi Hypac in Scunthorpe. Mondi had been experiencing problems cutting some board at certain speeds and decided to change the knife bars. JKSP engineers stripped a spare set of bars that Mondi have and then refilled the bars with lead shot.

The needle bearings were replaced before the gears were put back on; the knife bar holders were also replaced. During the following weekend the existing bars in the knife were stripped out before being replaced and tested for production. JKSP would normally have do this work over a longer period of time but Mondi Hypac’s spare set of bars limited the down time to just a weekend.

New Mitsubishi Corrugator Jeddah

New Mitsubishi Corrugator JeddahJKSP engineer Jim Whitaker (Big Jim) has just returned from Jeddah
where he led the team installing their new generation corrugator.
Jim has known Michael Weiner the Mitsubishi Europe service manager for many years and when he needed someone he could trust Michael turned to Jim for help.

Because of his work load Michael needed someone with a vast range of experience to help install the equipment in his absence.
Jim said he enjoyed the experience but was glad to be home as the temperatures were stifling. Jim would also like to thank all the installation team for their help and kindness during his visit.
